Nissan's brain-to-vehicle technology revealed… drive like a Jedi

If you won't use your brain our machine will use it for you, Nissan tells drivers

Nissan is creating a new technology that is called Brain-to-Vehicle (B2V), that will help the auto interpret human mind and thoughts.

It's all part of Nissan's drive to make driving more enjoyable, instead of just focusing on making cars more autonomous.

Nissan will be displaying its B2V technology on a driving simulator at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas between January 8 and 12.

The idea behind the tech research is to help speed up driver reaction times and forge a way for cars to adapt to their drivers in order to make driving more enjoyable. The neural interface, which cannot only improve reaction times, but also manage cabin comforts based on signals it takes from your brain, is one of the things Nissan will be showing off at CES this year.

Nissan has developed new technology that allows vehicles to read the brain activity of drivers, and initiate movement in response. Using this, it would be able to change the car's driving style when in autonomous mode. Researcher Dr. Lucian Gheorghe, who heads the B2V research, says that the tech could also use augmented realty to adjust what the driver sees and create a more relaxing environment. That might sound a bit creepy, but Nissan says its so-called B2V technology offers benefits for both manual and autonomous driving. A driver will wear a device that can measure the brain wave activity. The system lets your brain communicate with your vehicle and control it to help pursue your mission.

Toyota will add Amazon Alexa to select cars in 2018
One quarter of smart speaker owners report having a Google Assistant product such as Google Home or Google Home Mini . Toyota's Amazon embrace follows similar deals signed with BMW , Daimler, Fiat Chrysler, Ford , Hyundai and Nissan.

B2V is the latest development in Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company's vision for transforming how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society. "Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility, we are moving people to a better world by delivering more autonomy, more electrification and more connectivity", said Daniele Schillaci, Nissan executive vice president.

The automaker says that, by anticipating such movements, the auto can shave anything from 0.2 to 0.5 seconds off the usual, unassisted reaction time. Nissan hopes to have some version of Brain-to-Vehicle (B2V) ready for real-world use in th next five to 10 years, Nissan spokesman Nicholas Maxfield said.

Nissan will demonstrate the technology at CES 2018, the announcement said.

Nissan hasn't indicated when the technology will be implemented in a production vehicle.

Lots of companies are working on cars that drive themselves using computers.
