New York's JFK Airport experiences meltdown amid cold weather

Part of New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, which has been plagued by delays stranding thousands of passengers since Thursday's "Bomb Cyclone" winter storm, was evacuated Sunday afternoon following a massive water main break. At 4:30 p.m., the Port Authority reported power and heat were out in about 80 percent of the west end of Terminal 4 - the very arrivals section that was affected by the water main break.

As airlines scrambled to get operations back to normal on Sunday, a water main break at the airport's Terminal 4, the departure point for many worldwide flights, halted global arriving flights. Worldwide arrivals to Terminals 1 and 4 were particularly hard-hit, stranding many passengers in their planes; buses eventually had to be used to get people off of 25 planes. Almost 50 flights were canceled and more than 300 delayed by Sunday afternoon, according to FlightAware. Both planes were damaged, however no injuries were reported.

New York's other airports, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty, didn't seem to encounter anywhere near the same scale of problems over the weekend, and Senator Chuck Schumer is now calling for a "thorough review" of what went wrong at JFK.

Water poured from the ceiling into a check-in counter and covered a large swath of the floor of Terminal 4, according to live footage from CNN.

On Saturday, two days after the storm, 70 flights out of JFK were canceled and 228 were delayed, according to live flight tracking site, FlightAware. Officials hoped for normal operations after the issue was resolved, but many frustrated passengers were still experiencing delays for a fourth straight day Monday.

The Port Authority will review airport operations from the start of the winter weather, through the "inability" of global flights being able to arrive at gates in a timely manner into Monday.

Stony Brook family's cruise to Bahamas rocked by winter storm
The Norwegian Cruise Line ship was sailing in the Atlantic Ocean from the Bahamas to NY when the storm hit earlier this week. Passengers have since told of how they held on for life and feared their safety as the boat was rocking "like crazy".

Incoming worldwide flights were especially hard hit.

Then a feeder pipe to the sprinkler system broke due to the cold weather around 2 p.m. Sunday, flooding the terminal with 3 inches of water. "Customers may experience residual delays, particularly for worldwide flights".

"There's still like a hundred people waiting for their luggage", he told French Press Agency (AFP). "It's insane, it's unbelievable", he said.

"JFK's runways and taxiways are fully operational", the Port Authority said in a statement.

"This was a family of five, and the older daughter was heading back to college in Denver, while the rest were coming to Indianapolis, so they thought she would have to wait until Monday", Hawkins said Sunday evening. The airline said it was working with authorities in NY to investigate.

"There are 300 passengers there and I should say they're becoming restless", he said. Ultimately, it's responsible. The Port Authority must not divert this flight.
