Green Bay Packers dismiss OC Bennett, QB coach Van Pelt

Green Bay Packers dismiss OC Bennett, QB coach Van Pelt

Van Pelt joined the Packers organization in 2012, and was in his second season coaching the QB's.

McCarthy said at his season-ending news conference Thursday that Bennett may stay with the team in another capacity. He was promoted to coaching administrator in January 2007 and to defensive quality control coach on February 3, 2009.

Depending on which direction the winds blow in team president Mark Murphy's search to replace general manager Ted Thompson, they could be absolutely howling before long.

This comes two days after firing defensive coordinator Dom Capers, inside linebackers coach Scott McCurley and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac.

It's been a busy week in Green Bay.

But this past season, with Rodgers out for a big chunk of it, Green Bay would fall into the 20s in both categories for the first time since 1991. I love it here, I want to be here, but it has to fit for me, too.

McCarthy, who is fiercely loyal to his assistant coaches, doesn't often make wholesale changes to the staff.

Selena Gomez unfollows Demi Lovato, Gigi Hadid and more on Instagram
As the outlet explained, Gomez and Bieber have spent plenty of time with each other in the months since they reconciled. She leaves all of her social media up to her assistant, who presumably had the weird task of unfollowing herself.

The contract for Van Belt expired at the end of the regular season and Bennett's offensive coordinator title was taken away and there was the possibility he could return to take a position coaching job, but that was not expected.

All told, that's an astonishing amount of change for a franchise that'd made eight straight trips to the postseason, reached four NFC Championship Games and hasn't seen a staff shakeup even close to this since it last missed the playoffs in 2008 - as well as one with a two-time NFL MVP in the prime of his quarterbacking career.

McCarthy lamented the "personal aspect" of the changes, which he said is "what keeps me up at night".

Thompson was hired as the Packers' general manager in 2005, and the team had a 125-82-1 record and won Super Bowl XLV under his watch.

As for Gutekunst and Wolf, sure, they've worked in the same building with McCarthy, but their direct contact with the head coach's office has been much less than Thompson's. "We had a hell of a partnership for 12 years".

"When you say you have a standard at the Green Bay Packers, it stops right there", McCarthy said. "We have all the confidence in the world in Mike; we're going to have great success moving forward".

The Green Bay Packers took a step backward offensively in 2017, largely due to the long-term injury to star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
