French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said he would propose a new law to fight online fake news in the run-up to French elections.

He said that during the campaign, Russia Today and Sputnik news agencies had published false news stories about him.

"We need to recover a European ambition to be a more sovereign, more united, more democratic Europe", Macron said.

"Platforms will have more transparency obligations regarding sponsored content to make public the identity of sponsors and of those who control them, but also limits on the amounts that can be used to sponsor this content". "If we want to protect liberal democracies, we must have strong legislation".

In November, UK Prime Minister Theresa May also directly accused Russian Federation of seeking to meddle in the democratic affairs of other nations by planting fake stories in the media to try to sow discord in the West by "weaponizing information". There would also be an emergency provision that would allow a judge to delete content or block access to a website deemed to be propagating fake news.

Macron says press freedom wouldn't be threatened by this bill since it would only apply during campaigns.
