Doctor Accused of Having Wife Killed to Protect Drug Empire

Glenn Seeler

Tyner said on Tuesday that Dr. James Kauffman, 68, was afraid his wife would go to authorities about a drug enterprise he was allegedly helping to operate with members of the Pagan's Motorcycle Club, an outlaw bike gang. The drug scheme continued until Kauffman's arrest in June on weapons charges at his office. Eventually, Francis Mulholland, a member of the drug enterprise, was paid at least $20,000 to kill April Kauffman, which he did by shooting her twice inside the Kauffman home, Tyner said.

Tyner said that Kauffman told Augello about his wife's threats and solicited him to have her killed.

With his self-described "financial empire" in jeopardy, James Kauffman and Augello began propositioning several people to murder April Kauffman, according to Tyner.

Kauffman has long maintained his innocence and denies any involvement in his wife's death, his attorney Ed Jacobs told Philly.

April Kauffman was shot to death in her bedroom more than five years ago. Tyner said he died of an overdose in 2013. "As a victim, May 10, 2012, forever changed my life".

Prosecutors say Dr. Kauffman hired a hitman with ties to the Pagans to kill his wife after she threatened to expose the illegal pill mill drug operation he ran out of his office with the Pagans.

During the early morning hours of May 10, 2012, Frank Mullholland received a ride to the Kauffmans home and was given a gun, officials said. (Vernon Ogrodnek/The Press of Atlantic City via AP) James Kauffman is shown in an undated photo provided by the Atlantic County, NJ, Prosecutor's office.

A health benefits fraud investigation was initiated by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office over the summer; it is running parallel to a federal investigation centered on South Jersey doctors, pharmaceutical representatives and public employees that may also involve Kauffman.

"The doors were left open and Frank Mulholland was given a gun to carry out his task".

According to various reports, the investigators found the doctor used to write free prescriptions to people who were referred to his office by Augello, which would include drugs that were high in demand, such as percocet, oxycontin and oxycodone. "I have been waiting patiently for justice and today I was luckily enough to be granted justice".

A New Jersey physician has been charged with murder after allegedly ordering the killing of his wife, who was seeking a divorce and threatening to expose his illegal opioid ring, prosecutors said.

"As you can imagine today is a very, very hard day for me and my family... a lot of mixed emotions", said Pack.

Kim Pack, who was 29 years old when her mother was murdered, vowed to never give up fighting for justice. During the search at his medical practice, Kauffman allegedly confronted the officers while brandishing a Ruger 9mm handgun. Her body was discovered by a handyman who cared for pet birds in the couple's home in the suburb of Atlantic City. A hostage negotiator persuaded him to surrender.
