Vivo unveils first device with in-display fingerprint scanner at CES 2018

Android Headlines did point out that the fingerprint sensor requires the display to be active when unlocking, which might come as a disappointment to those who were hoping that they can use the biometric technology without waking the display. According to reports, the first smartphone with in-display fingerprint technology will be unveiled on January 10.

The Vivo phone, sporting an all-screen design is on display at the show, and The Verge was able to test Synaptics's Clear ID fingerprint sensor. The bezel-less displays are predicted to occupy from 20% in 2017 to over 50% of the smartphone market by 2020.

The firm said in a statement it wants to accommodate the demand for bigger screens without sacrificing user experience.

We've been talking about in-display fingerprint readers for what feels like quite some time now, but at long last, the tech is starting to catch up with our imagination. It works the same way as the fingerprint sensor that's now used by some smartphones. However, every fingerprint sensor now is fast and accurate. This latest fingerprint scanning technology delivers a whole new mobile experience by enabling users to unlock their smartphone through one-touch fingerprint scanning directly on the smartphone display, while solving the industry's challenge of providing a better and more convenient fingerprint authentication experience in future smartphones.

Most People Who Try One Cigarette Become Daily Smokers, Study Says
Among those, 68.9% said they had gone on to smoke every day. "The presence of nicotine is clearly not the whole story". Almost three million are now using e-cigarettes in a bid to quit, according to the Office for National Statistics.

At the moment, the feature is still on a prototype device and vivo says they will have it on a real production smartphone very soon.

In December, manufacturing company Synaptics announced that it's created a technology allowing fingerprint scanners to be placed under displays. The handset was a bit slower in learning the contours of the user's fingerprint and unlocking the device using the fingerprint. The new technology will be capable of detecting fingerprints up to 1.5mm thick with a screen protector.

One thing to note about the device is the fact that the fingerprint scanner is a little compared to other devices but that's the trade-off you have to make for thin bezels and no fingerprint sensor on the back of the device. If Vivo ships smartphones with this technology, you can expect other companies such as Xiaomi to follow the same path.
