Apple Store Evacuated After iPhone Battery Overheats, Filling Store With Smoke

Apple accused of overcharging customers for repairing old batteries

Despite recently releasing an apology over how it slows down older iPhones with battery ageing, Apple is still under fire and now faces over 26 lawsuits.

However it seems that their apology and battery replacement program isn't enough to appease the masses, and now it looks like the U.S. government has Apple in their crosshairs. He also questioned if Apple considered the idea of offering rebates to customers who had already paid full price for a replacement battery.

Zurich police said the incident occurred as the fix worker was removing the battery, which overheated and burned his hand slightly.

This all started in December after users on Reddit complained of slowing iPhones and Primate Labs' John Poole ran benchmark tests on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 over time, across various iOS updates.

The pressure from the United States follows action by the French government. Bloggers and technology pundits criticized Apple for not disclosing the practice sooner, and the company apologized late last month, saying it would slash the costs for some iPhone battery replacements from $79 to $29. Presumably Apple has more than enough confidence in its batteries to assume such cases will be rare.

"Unbeknownst to iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 6s owners, Apple inserted code into iOS 10.2.1 that deliberately slowed down the processing performance of these phones by linking each phone's processing performance with its battery health".

Apple did not respond to the Journal's requests for comment on Tuesday. An iPhone is only eligible for one no-questions asked discounted battery replacement.

"Moreover, Apple's proposed solutions have prompted additional criticism from some customers", Thune continued, "particularly its decision not to provide free replacement batters to affected customers".

Among the 26 lawsuits is law firm Hagens Berman which claims Apple "secretly" installed a code to intentionally slow down iPhones.
