Watch BMW break a drifting record thanks to car-to-car refueling

BMW set the world record for the longest continuous drift smashing the previous record set by Toyota

Guinness has yet to certify the record - set by Johan Schwartz on a small, circular track at BMW's Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina - but an adjudicator was on-hand to confirm the achievement. However, BMW USA wasn't happy about that and instead wanted to prove it can break the record without stopping, despite drifting for up to eight hours. But for this, BMW wanted to take things to the next level. Mullins has to drift his vehicle along with Schwartz so that the latter's auto can be refuelled mid-drift, from the extra gasoline tank mounted in the car's trunk.

So rather than just stuffing a massive gas tank inside, BMW came up with a clever refueling system, not unlike how airplanes are refueled in the sky.

The previous record was last set by Toyota in 2017, when journalist Jesse Adams managed to keep a new 86 sideways for 165 km, a feat that took six hours and was pulled off using added, larger fuel tanks in-car.

Schwartz's sustained drift measured an impressive 232.5 miles, or 143 miles more than the previous record set in 2014.

Android Oreo Fails To Reach Even 1% Share
A further breakdown reveals that Android 8.0 takes a 0.5 percent share and the latest Oreo 8.1 sits at just 0.2 percent. If Android Nougat continues the same trend, we can see it closing onto Android Marshmallow in the next few months.

But the two records weren't the most thrilling part of the attempt. "In the end, the refueling system worked flawlessly and the M5 performed as expected". As we detailed on Monday, BMW chose to up the ante a little.

This week, both Schwartz and Mullins will be at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and will be performing a drifting demonstration in the new F90 BMW M5 at the top of every hour.

You see, BMW, via its North American arm, claimed the record back in 2013 with the previous-gen BMW M5.
