Four killed, national-level powerlifter hurt in Delhi road accident

While four powerlifters were killed in the accident, Saksham Yadav, who won a gold medal in the 2017 powerlifting championship for the country, was seriously injured along with another player, a police official informed.

The accident took place on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway.

Police say that the incident was reported around 4am when the players were returning from an athletic meet in Panipat in a Swift Dzire vehicle.

DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said the deceased have been identified as Tikamchand alias Tinka (27), Saurabh (18), Yogesh (24) and Harish Roy (20).

Saksham Yadav, who got seriously injured in a vehicle crash today is a powerlifter who won a gold medal for India at powerlifting world championship held in Moscow in December 2017.

The auto followed through and then hit an electric pole. The impact of the accident was so brutal that the roof of the vehicle was completely blown off. Yadav and his colleague have been admitted to a private hospital. The group had been celebrating one of their members' birthday when the incident took place.

"Prima facie, the auto was at very high speed". Some liquor bottles were found in the auto.

Police are also probing the angle of drunken driving. The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. CCTV footages from the cameras installed at the Singhu border are being scanned to find out the cause of the accident.
