Not-So-Secret Santa: New Zealand PM's Gift Gives Away Identity

The Prime Minister was given a framed drawing of Auckland's Sky Tower by Zara of Panmure Bridge School.

Finally the Prime Minister has a special Christmas message for New Zealand's farming community, acknowledging that rural work doesn't stop for the festive season.

Apparently, New Zealanders have joined in a nationwide Secret Santa game along with their Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Although the gift she's received is a secondary secret santa (her OG one hasn't arrived yet), Ardern recorded herself opening it live on camera and the resulting footage is so dang joyous it makes me want to immediately start breast-stroking across the Tasman to see if they'll have me as one of their own. "Oh... it's the wrapping paper." Ded.

But many participants did not plan on waiting for Christmas to open their packages, and took to Twitter to post photos and thank their anonymous gift giver.

New Zealand Secret Santa's are a creative bunch, sending everything from home made gifts, including a survival guide to one foreigner's first Kiwi Xmas, to a box full of ingredients to make colourful ice cream sundaes, sans ice cream of course.

If you've never heard of the Secret Santa tradition - sometimes known as Kris Kringle - groups of people usually in offices or big families draw a name of a person in the group.

According to New Zealand Post 3623 people signed up for Secret Santa in 2017.

"Hi Jacinda, here is an extra present from another NZ Secret Santa".

'There are only four people who have one of these.
