MLS to decide on next expansion franchise in 2018

MLS commissioner Don Garber announced the new franchise Wednesday afternoon

Nashville's bid to join Major League Soccer had been in talks for what seems like a long time and now, the league has officially awarded the city with a new team. "'So soccer-involved, great ownership and a great stadium plan, it just seemed like the ideal, flawless match".

A day after selecting Nashville, Tennessee, as one of its next two additions, MLS officials said they are still considering which market to add from among Cincinnati, Detroit and Sacramento. A decision on the second victor is expected within a few weeks.

When Nashville starts playing remains to be decided.

The MLS expansion race has also been impacted by the continued delays in David Beckham's Miami expansion group securing its stadium to join the league. "We're hopeful we'll be able to bring that team over the finish line". The ownership group for the Nashville team is led by John R. Ingram, chairman of Ingram Industries Inc, Minnesota Vikings owners Mark, Zygi and Leonard Wilf, and the Turner Family, who are managing partners of MarketStreet Enterprises.

The MLS franchise will play in a new, 27,500-seat stadium. Garber said that Nashville was a "perfect place for MLS expansion" as the city itself was ascending as one of the nation's "most dynamic communities" filled with "energy and creativity".

Nashville had been considered the front-runner in the expansion bidding.

"All of those other bids are MLS ready".

"They have some things to finalize with their ownership that I think would make them optimum", Garber said.

Founded in 1993, Major League Soccer has seen a surge in interest in recent years, resulting in higher attendance, season-ticket sales and TV ratings. Forward Filip Forsberg of the Predators was at the news conference Wednesday, and the Titans tweeted out photos of players holding up shirts supporting the town's newest pro team.
