Gujarat Results: Rahul Gandhi to Attend Congress Review Meeting in Ahmedabad

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday once again attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the Gujarat verdict has raised questions on the PM's credibility and shown that the country is not listening to him anymore.

Gujarat BJP president Jitu Vaghani said the opposition party must admit defeat in the state polls, which saw the BJP winning 99 seats in the 182-member assembly, down from 115 in 2012, and the Congress bagging 77, a gain of 16 seats.

The first phase of assembly elections in Gujarat were conducted on December 9 in 89 constituencies and the polling for the second phase was held on December 14 for 93 assembly constituencies.

"I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for their affection and trust in BJP".

Modi said even Indira could not achieve what the BJP had since the party swept the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

"We will be forming the government here for the sixth consecutive term".

The Gandhi scion has been praised by several Opposition parties for Congress' commendable performance in Gujarat. One must admit that the way Congress party and others had highlighted the so-called negative impact of the GST and demonetisation, the BJP had a hard time convincing the Gujarati business community about the long-term benefits of these moves. The BJP has been ruling Gujarat since 1995.

Addressing media, a day after Assembly elections results, he said that Congress may have lost the election but put an impressive performance.

Sources also stated that the Prime Minister asserted his electoral track record, saying that under the reign of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Congress had been in power in 18 states, while the BJP now shares power in 19 states.

In declaring victory, BJP chief Amit Shah credited Modi for prevailing over "family politics" - a thinly-veiled sleight against Rahul and the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has led Congress for generations.

Few leaders also said there would be discussion on the road map for 2019 Lok Sabha polls, as the party cadre is confident after this results.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself had come under fire on many occasions for invoking religion during his campaign, when asked Congress to choose between 'temple and mosque'.
