Woman claims she was billed $350 for bad hotel review

The Abbey Inn has now had a lawsuit filed against it. Source Google Maps

An Indiana woman received a $350 hotel charge on her credit card because she wrote a negative review of the place online.

IN native, Katrina Arthur and her husband stayed at the hotel Abbey Inn & Suites in March 2016.

Arthur alleges that when they arrived, the room was not cleaned. "So we start checking the sheets and the bed and we found hairs, dirt, so wasn't insane about that either, of course I was disgusted", she said.

As for Arthur, she's out to get her money back, and she's hoping this lawsuit sends a harsh message to any hoteliers who think they can go after customers for their reviews.

She said the hotel had no visible staff they could talk to at the time, and that calling the number on the front desk didn't work.

So, when the hotel asked Arthur to review her stay at the Abbey Inn, she made sure her experience was heard.

"I was honest and I wanted people to know not to waste their money, not to go there because I know people save their money for special occasions", she said.

An Indiana hotel has reportedly charged a woman $350 after she left a negative review, according to reports.

If Arthur didn't take down the negative review, Szakaly threatened to file a libel lawsuit against her, according to the attorney general's office.

Indiana's suit, filed December 15, seeks a reimbursement for the guest, Katrina Arthur, and a court order barring the southern IN hotel from maintaining and enforcing such a policy, which it calls "unfair, abusive, and deceptive". "Should the guest refuse to retract any such public statements legal action may be pursued", Fox News reported.

The policy could be found briefly on a document on the hotel's website, but it wasn't provided to guests or posted anywhere at the inn, according to the lawsuit.

"That scared me to death", Arthur told WRTV.

Here's one I've never heard of before.

"There's nothing wrong with being truthful", she said. Consumers should leave truthful reviews regarding the goods and services that they received.

Based on the protections of IN and federal law, consumers should feel comfortable leaving truthful reviews about their experiences. They promptly contacted state authorities.

"It is illegal, unethical for businesses to charge consumers or threaten legal action", said Brown.
