BT & Sky reach deal to sell each other's channels

The agreement with Sky will allow BT customers to take all 11 Sky Sports channels, as well as a NOW TV Entertainment pass offering Sky Living, Sky One and Sky Atlantic channels. This will mean that satellite customers will be able to buy BT Sport from Sky as well as from BT.

BT has agreed a deal to sell Sky's low-priced OTT TV service Now TV to BT TV customers.

BT is keeping its United States drama channel, AMC, as an exclusive for its own customers, including those Sky households who sign up to the BT Sport pack directly with BT.

Through Now TV, BT will be able to offer all eleven Sky Sports channels, as well as a Now TV Entertainment passes.

Sky customers will be able to record BT Sport content on their set top boxes but it seems unlikely BT customers will be able to record as NOW TV is a streaming service. There is a Sky Sports Main Event channel for some live action, including the occasional Premier League match, F1 coverage or cricket test match, but that's it.

TV customers of Sky - the owner of Sky News - and BT will soon be able to buy the content of both firms through their provider as part of a so-called cross supply deal that has been years in the making. "This agreement fits with our strategic goal of being the best provider in the United Kingdom of converged network services, and adding NOW TV boosts our growing roster of outstanding content from the likes of Netflix, great pay channels like AMC and all the major catch-up services".

BT Sport will also be available as an app on NOW TV boxes, giving customers who receive the channel with BT Broadband an easy way to watch on their TVs. The operator, which added only 7,000 TV customers in the three months to March, saw operating costs increase to £1.02 billion, resulting in lower EBITDA.

United Kingdom consumers will have even more ways to watch great Sky entertainment content with our leading portfolio of channels - Sky Atlantic, Sky One and Sky Living - available on all major Pay-TV platforms for the first time.

As quoted by the BBC, Marc Allera, the chief executive of BT Consumer said that competition is what led to the move. "Arguably the biggest losers in this tie up are TalkTalk and Virgin Media".
