York Council chiefs refuse to renew Uber's licence in York

Uber's operating license has been revoked in York, which has now become the third city in the United Kingdom to ban the ride-hailing service.

In total, York council received 296 complaints relating to private hire and hackney carriage drivers.

Councillors also cited a data breach which affected millions of users of the app worldwide. Uber has 21 days to decide whether to appeal against the decision to a magistrates' court.

Hackers were able to obtain the names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers of passengers and drivers, the taxi-hailing firm said.

Members of York Council's Gambling, Licensing and Regulatory Committee tonight debated for more than two hours over Uber Britannia Limited's application.

Uber has been operating in York for 16 months and according to Saf Din, chair of the York Hackney Carriage Drivers Association, only a handful of drivers are licensed to work in the popular tourist hotspot and university town.

Labour's Danny Myers believes the company fails the "fit and proper" test to be awarded a renewed licence, and was one of the speakers urging the cross-party licensing committee to reject Uber's application.

It raised concerns about the massive data breach Uber suffered - and subsequently hid - in October 2016, and the number of complaints it had received about its service.

Uber has pledged to clean up its act and make changes as it battles to regain its licence in London.

Gambling Commission Report Finds Gambling In 11-Year-Olds
Surveying a population of 2803, the report also found that of that 11 per cent, just over half had done so in the prior month. Daniel Williams has started his writing career as a freelance author at a local paper media.

Uber said they wanted to change the name on their licence as the named individual would soon be leaving the company but were told by the council they would instead have to apply for a completely new licence.

An Uber spokesman said competition was good for the local economy.

The licence renewal rejection in the northern English city was another blow to Uber's United Kingdom operations after it was found unfit to run a taxi service in London in September and its Sheffield licence was suspended earlier this month.

In a statement, Uber described the decision, which it will review in due course, as "disappointing" for its riders.

It comes after Transport for London refused to renew Uber's licence on the grounds of "public safety and security implications" in September.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn backed the action, saying the body had looked at the firm and "expressed very serious concerns".

He had been given £30,000 for his mayoral campaign by the union that represents black cab drivers. A London court is expected to hear the case next year.

However, Khan - who as mayor is chairman of the Transport for London board but did not take part in the licensing decision - said Uber had brought the ban on itself.
