Saudi-backed forces push toward key rebel-held port in Yemen

Ex-Yemen president buried in Sanaa Official

Forces loyal to the internationally recognized government are hoping to exploit the collapse of the Houthis' alliance with fighters loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was killed by the rebels earlier this month.

The security situation in Sanaa has calmed down after the Houthis completely controlled the capital and defeated Saleh's armed supporters.

The rebels overran the television's Sanaa offices on Saturday after attacking it with rocket-propelled grenades and wounding three guards, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said.

The clashes first erupted last week after Saleh's loyalists prevented Houthis from entering a Saleh-run mosque to secure a nearby religious celebration organised by the group in Sabeen Square in central Sanaa.

The Saudi regime and its allies have been incessantly pounding Yemen since March 2015 in an attempt to crush the Houthi Ansarullah movement and reinstall a former regime that was staunchly allied with Riyadh.

A least 234 people were killed in fighting that the International Committee of the Red Cross described as the fiercest since the start of the conflict.

The Saleh relative said no more than 20 people attended the burial, under the strict watch of the Huthis.

"But the journalists refused to do it", the official said.

Press freedom groups and the Sanaa-based national syndicate of journalists have called on the rebels to end their "abuses" against journalists and release the group immediately.
