Graphic weather satellite image suggests Storm Caroline set to pound Ireland today

Met Office

Met Office meteorologist John West said: "Storm Caroline is well on its way across northern parts of the UK".

Snow showers could continue until Monday - with a spell of "heavy snow" possible over some central parts of the United Kingdom during Sunday.

In an yellow "be prepared" weather alert, the Met Office has warned of snow and ice across the United Kingdom today.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning - meaning that there is a "danger to life" - for parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of northern England on Sunday.

Storm Caroline is expected to see winds gusting to 80mph near north-facing coasts, and reaching speeds of 60 to 70mph more widely in northern and north east Scotland.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning ahead of the deluge amid fears of rail and air travel delays, as well as public transport cancellations and the stranding of vehicles.

"This will bring gale force and gusty winds along with heavy rain spreading south-east followed by frequent snow showers and blizzards over Scotland".

Snow is expected to fall across many other parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western England on Friday, with between 2cm and 5cm likely in some areas.

The cold front moves in today and forecasters are predicting strong winds of up to 110km/h in some places, as well as up to 3cm of snow.

BBC weather presenter Louise Lear said Storm Caroline is moving away towards Scandinavia but is allowing a band of cold air to push into the UK.

The Met Office says across the United Kingdom, 2-5 cm (1-2 inches) of snow is likely in the other affected areas, with 10-20 cm possible in some locations, mainly in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and possibly the north-west Midlands. Gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour are expected widely with gusts to 90 miles per hour possible in exposed areas.

A total of 159 people were working the Ninian South platform.

A yellow "be aware" warning has also now been put in place for central and parts of southern Scotland.

The first service to run as scheduled on Thursday was not until 7.55am.

Violent Storm Caroline slammed into the United Kingdom yesterday, bringing winds up to 116mph, 33ft waves and torrential rain to large swathes of the country.

Caroline is the third storm to hit the United Kingdom this year, after Aileen and Brian.
