Michigan State asks attorneys to cooperate with Larry Nassar investigation

Aly Raisman Sexual Assault- Lede

Indeed, the university is a defendant in many cases filed by more than 100 women and girls who say they were assaulted by the doctor.

Manly said athletes who were uncomfortable with Nassar years ago reported their concerns to university staff but nothing happened.

In addition to the federal child pornography changes, Nassar has pleaded guilty to sexual assault in state court in both Ingham and Eaton counties.

But in a letter written by Pat Fitzgerald, a former U.S. Attorney now in private practice and representing MSU, said there's no report to that effect.

He has pleaded guilty to 10 counts of sexual assault in two other cases in MI, admitting that he abused young athletes under the guise of offering medical treatment.

Among the more than 140 women who have joined civil suits against MSU, USA Gymnastics and others are those alleging that MSU gymnastics and administrators ignored warning signs and did not investigate complaints, dating back as far as the 1990s. They say the people in a position to stop him told the girls that they were misunderstanding medical procedures and suggested they shouldn't talk to others about their concerns. But he said Michigan State is "ready, willing and able to cooperate" with any inquiry by state or federal authorities.

Nassar is now scheduled to be sentenced for his state crimes starting January 12.

Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon told Schuette on Wednesday that she and the school meant to "cooperate fully" with the attorney general's office but directed his request for more information to Fitzgerald.

"It is clear that Nassar fooled everyone around him - patients, friends, colleagues and fellow doctors at MSU", said Fitzgerald, who built a crime-busting reputation as USA attorney in Chicago.

"Plaintiffs' counsel have publicly compared this case with the matter involving Penn State University", Fitzgerald's response reads, in part.

Fitzgerald said in his letter to Schuette that he has found no evidence that any Michigan State official believed Nassar committed sexual abuse prior to reports about his misconduct in the summer of 2016.

"At this time, we are reviewing the letter we received from Mr. Fitzgerald to evaluate our next step", said Schuette's press secretary, Andrea Bitely is Schuette's press secretary. It's not clear if they will make that information available to the public when they receive it.

Both Whitmer, a Democrat, and Schuette, a Republican, are seeking their party's nomination for MI governor in 2018. Several victims plan to attend the sentencing and will speak at news conferences after the hearing, including former MI gymnast, the first to publicly accuse Nassar, and Olympic gold medalist, who accused Nassar of assault in October as part of the ongoing #MeToo social media campaign.

"Today the justice feels very incomplete", said the 32-year-old. Jessica Smith, 22, said she didn't feel comforted by the fact that Nassar, 54, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. "But we are not comforted. I hate that Larry took away my trust of others".
