Record broken after 17-foot-1-inch Burmese Python caught

Florida Python 2

Florida snake hunters captured a monstrous 132-pound Burmese python in the Everglades on Friday.

The clip also shows the group measuring the reptile - the largest captured so far under the South Florida Water Management Districts elimination program. He described it as being able to "kill any full-grown man".

In a video posted the SFWMD's Facebook page, Leon said he grabbed the snake and shot it in the head.

Leon's Friday catch bested the hunt's previous record, held by hunter Dusty Crum who caught a 16-foot, 11-inch snake last week.

Since March, the program has eradicated more than 700 snakes in on District lands in Miami-Dade, Broward and Collier counties, which, if laid out end to end, would measure over 1.4 km and weigh over 4,500 kilos.

Mike Kirkland, a SFWMD scientist and the project manager for the Python Elimination Program, praised it for being "enormously effective in killing this relentless predator to help preserve native Everglades wildlife". The hunters will receive $375 for catching the snake.
