Jaguar Land Rover starts testing autonomous cars on United Kingdom roads

Signs are seen outside the Jaguar Land Rover plant at Halewood in Liverpool northern England September 12, 2016

Jaguar Land Rover engineers are keen to test their technology in the topsy-turvy world of everyday driving.

Today, Jaguar Land Rover announced that it's begun testing autonomous vehicles on public roads, making it among the first to do so in the United Kingdom.

It's not just the car-based technology that's under scrutiny, though - the JLR team is also working with connected street furniture, such as traffic lights that talk to the auto and cars that communicate information to each other.

The trial is planned to expand further around Coventry and also into Milton Keynes in early 2018, with a final series of open road demonstrations also scheduled for the second half of that year.

This news follows on a number of other firms beginning self-driving vehicle testing on public roads in the United Kingdom over the a year ago, including Renault and Nissan.

'Testing this self-driving project on public roads is so exciting, as the complexity of the environment allows us to find robust ways to increase road safety in the future, ' said JLR's executive director of product engineering, Nick Rogers.

So as Jaguar Land Rover work to get self-driving technology in to production - as part of the £20m UK Autodrive project - they're now out on the streets of Coventry playing with what they've got.

"The testing is taking place in the central English city of Coventry, the historic heart of the British vehicle industry, where JLR is headquartered". Before this you have to go through the necessary period road tests, improving unmanned technologies, which need to invest a lot of money.

JLR is part of UK Autodrive, the largest of three consortia launched to support the introduction of self-driving vehicles into the UK.

The hope is that Autodrive will help make the United Kingdom a global centre for the research and development into automated and connected vehicles, and into making them a part of daily life.
