Teenager Dies After Weightlifting Accident At PCYC Gym

Ben Shaw reportedly spent half an hour with his neck stuck under a 98kg bar.

15-year-old Brisbane boy Ben Shaw has died in hospital, days after he was found trapped under exercise equipment at a Pine Rivers gym, while attempting to lift more than his body weight.

He was given first aid by staff and other gym members before paramedics rushed him to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

An anonymous woman said that her husband arrived at the gym when it was "quiet" and noticed Shaw "just lying on the bench with a bar right across his neck".

His junior rugby league club also praised the teenager for leaving behind a "legacy" with his family's decision to donate his organs.

"'Yesterday afternoon they (the Shaw family) lost their handsome Ben and has been able to leave a legacy by donating his tissue and organs to enable recipients have their lives saved and changed forever as a result", the Facebook post said.

PCYC gym rules state that all members under the age of 17 years must "undertake a PCYC Gym induction prior to participating in any Gym+Fitness activity".

Worksafe Queensland has launched an investigation into the Pine Rivers PCYC and the incident.

In a brief statement on their Facebook page, Pine Rivers PCYC said: 'Our thoughts and deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Ben Shaw at this hard time'.

'Tragically taken away far too soon.my deepest condolences go out to his parents, family and friends, ' one mourner wrote.

'Words are not enough to describe the sadness we feel for the Shaw family'.

Mr Humphries says the gym is cooperating with Worksafe and conducting its own investigation.

"I will never forget all of our good times together and how we always used to hang, you where (sic) always there for me rest in peace and fly high my angel you will be missed".
