Mozo clings onto single-shot NZ Open lead

Canada's Brooke Henderson leads the NZ Women's Open field into a fifth day's play because of rain

Driving rain and wind has disrupted the New Zealand women's golf open at the Windross Course in Auckland forcing play into a fifth day to complete the final round.

Spectators will be given free entry to Windross Farm on Monday.

Sunday's proceedings were officially called off at 5.30pm due to yet another downpour, spoiling the LPGA's plan to push play through to sunset at 7.15pm.

That created a logistical nightmare with Tour officials having to reschedule flights and accommodation for the 78 players still in the tournament. At the end of the day our players want to play 72 holes especially when that has been advertised in advance.

But they are all chasing Spain's Belen Mozo, who fired rounds of 66 and 64 to take a five shot lead at 14-under 130 through 36 holes. But again Auckland's inclement weather had the final say.

Henderson sheltered under a golf umbrella and Mozo ran for cover, as a gust of wind ripped a sign to pieces and blew the remnants through the green.

Mozo was captured by TV cameras expressing her frustration, no doubt fuelled by the fact she had also dropped two shots on the round to fall four behind the hard-charging Henderson who birdied three of her first six holes.

Henderson was 3-under Sunday after her six holes.

Denmark's Nicole Broch Larsen and China's Jing Yan were tied for fourth on 12 under.

New Zealand's Lydia Ko, the former world number one, carded a third-round 70 to move up one place for a share of 11th on 208. That left her eight shots behind Henderson on nine under, in a tie for ninth.

"Our goal is always to get 72 holes in when we are schedule for 72 holes".

"There are a number of things we needed to factor in before making this decision".

"But I know there's a lot of golf to be played, so I've just got to focus on my game and go from there".

"The advice from (forecasters) is that we will face some challenging conditions and we believe it is prudent to get play completed as early as possible", tournament director Michael Goldstein said.

But returning on Monday was the right thing to do, Ream said earlier on Sunday.
