IRS Now Sharing Info with Mueller Russia Investigation

The Latest On Mueller's Russia Investigation

The Internal Revenue Service is sharing information with special counsel Robert Mueller about top Donald Trump aides, following a months-long battle between the two entities over what information the IRS is able to share, CNN reports.

A former high-level Justice Department official told the network that the IRS information shared most likely included real estate and banking records - "anything tax-related".

The disclosure of the IRS's cooperation with the special counsel investigation comes after it was recently revealed that Mueller's investigators have locked in on former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who has extensive financial ties to Russian Federation, and even allegedly offered to privately brief a friend of Putin's in July 2016.

CNN reported Tuesday that the Manafort raid was the subject of inter-agency acrimony, with the IRS refusing to participate because of fears Mueller's team would interfere with their earlier financial probe.

In August, Mueller's investigators raided Manafort's home in Northern Virginia, seizing documents and other materials, a day after he met with the Senate Intelligence Committee in its Moscow probe.

Seven arrested in Egypt after raising rainbow flag at concert
Nearly half were sentenced to prison after a trial that was widely criticized by human rights groups and Western governments. Although homosexuality is not specifically outlawed in Egypt, it is a conservative society and discrimination is rife.

The absence of IRS criminal investigations agents for the raid is unusual for a probe that centers on tax and financial matters.

The information the IRS can share is restricted under Title 26 US Code and usually needs a grand jury subpoena to share tax returns with another agency.

IRS records, including individual income tax returns, are among the federal government's mostly tightly held documents. It was also reported earlier this month that Manafort has been wiretapped by the Federal Bureau of Investigation since at least 2014.

According to CNN, Mueller's team has alerted Manafort that he might be charged with a crime. This comes on the heels of news that Manafort has already been informed that he'll be indicted, something that longtime Trump ally Roger Stone said Manfort fully expects will happen. He is not going to lie.
